Welcome! Joan Molloy Slack brings her art to many facets of her life. She is a fiber artist working primarily in “pictorial” felt-making, where fiber is used to “paint” 2-dimensional artwork. She is also ceramicist, working in a variety of ways with clay to create sculpture and pottery. She has been teaching for over 25 years, and offers art classes and workshops year-round. For the last 15 years she has been traveling and leading art related tours to Ireland, Scotland, France and Mexico. She offers new tours and workshops each year around the world, which she writes about on her blog Joan is also a travel writer, and enjoys writing about creative people, interesting places and positive collaborations that are changing the world.

Tree Spirit Art Dolls In this workshop we will construct art doll sculptures, with the tree spirit as the theme. Using clay faces, found materials, and mixed media, such as beads, cloth and paints, each person will create a sculpture that has special meaning and is a unique personal expression. We will explore personal symbolism and motifs as the dolls are constructed, incorporating individuality into the finished product. No experience necessary. Students should bring whatever materials might be useful such as fabric, embellishments such as beads, ribbon, shells, stones or feathers. Ages 12+
The ART of Felt Making After an overview of the history of wool and its uses, we will learn the many ways to work with fleece and needle felting to create functional and decorative works of art. Students will create a sampler of different methods, then a colored wool landscape to utilize the techniques learned, as well as several other projects. No experience necessary. All materials provided, but bring fleece or other needle felting tools if you have them. Ages 12 +

“Felting the Southwestern Landscape” A workshop and tour in Santa Fe, NewMexico April 17-26, 2016
The landscape of southwestern New Mexico is rich in color, form and ever changing light, and beautifully lends itself to interpretation is art. In this workshop we will explore ancient petroglyphs and pueblos where the past and present merge, learn about the history and culture of Santa Fe and surrounding areas, and experience the rich and vibrant art scene with visits to artists and museums. All of this experience will be brought back to our hands-on felt-making workshop focused on “Felting the Southwestern Landscape”.
Felt-making is an ancient art, used for thousands of years to create clothing, shelter and tapestries. In this workshop we will use needle felting to create art by painting with the fiber. Your instructor, Joan Molloy Slack, learned to felt in Ireland, where she has led art and cultural tours for 15 years. After exploring the variety of ways of working with fleece, from Turkish rug making to creating hats and mittens, she became fascinated with the possibilities of using the fiber “pictorially”. She has taught workshops using this technique for over 14 years, and enjoys using symbols, mythology and personal imagery in her landscapes. In the workshop we will bring our experiences in the landscape into our felt-work, and Joan will discuss and demonstrate how to bring a personal, unique and exciting dimension to the landscape format.
